City Of Los Angeles Declares Saturday, September 3 'Donovan Day'

This Friday (September 2) at 10:00 AM, singer and songwriter Donovan and the Los Angeles City Council, led by Councilmember Paul Koretz, Fifth District as well as other city leaders, will be on hand for a special press conference, ceremony and brief acoustic performance to mark the annual declaration of "Donovan Day" at L.A.City Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

The night before (Thursday, September 1), Donovan will stop by Jimmy Kimmel Live! for a performance. The singer will sit in with Cleo & the Cletones (Jimmy's house band) and perform classic songs from his legendary canon.

Historically, September 3, 2016, marks the actual to-the-date 50-year anniversary of when Donovan's hit single "Sunshine Superman" reached #1 on the Billboard charts in 1966.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of his landmark 1966 album Sunshine Superman, Donovan will launch his "Sunshine Superman' North American Tour" this fall. In Los Angeles, the tour will stop in Pasadena, CA at The Rose on Friday, October 7 and in Beverly Hills, CA at The Saban Theatre on Saturday, October 8.

Jethro Tull's 'Stand Up' To Get Elevated

Jethro Tull's second album, Stand Up, marked an early turning point for the band with the addition of guitarist Martin Barre along with Ian Anderson's introduction of folk-rock influences to the group's blues-based sound. Released in the summer of 1969, Stand Up rose quickly to the top of the U.K. Albums Chart, and eventually earned gold certification in the U.S.

This fall, Parlophone will release Stand Up (The Elevated Edition), a deluxe version of the album as a double CD with a DVD set on November 18.

The set will include:

  • The original album and bonus tracks (including the previously unreleased "Bouree") remixed in 5.1 surround and stereo by Steven Wilson
  • A 96/24 flat transfer of the original stereo master tapes
  • A 96/24 flat transfer of the original mono and stereo mixes of "Living In The Past" and "Driving Song"
  • A vdeo of the band performing live in January 1969
  • The now familiar book sized packaging that includes a 112-page booklet with an extensive history of the album, track-by-track annotations by Ian Anderson, plus rare and unseen photographs
  • The original album's pop-up book artwork designed by James Grashow

Stand Up was the first album where Anderson controlled the music and lyrics, resulting in a group of diverse songs that ranged from the swirling blues of "A New Day Yesterday" and the mandolin-fueled rave-up of "Fat Man," to the group's spirited re-working of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Bouree in E Minor."

In a recent interview, Anderson picked Stand Up as his favorite Jethro Tull album, "because that was my first album of first really original music. It has a special place in my heart."

The first disc features Steven Wilson's new stereo mixes of the original album, along with a number of rare recordings, including an unreleased version of "Bouree." Other highlights include four songs recorded at the BBC, plus stereo single mixes for "Living In The Past" and "Driving Song."

The second disc captures Jethro Tull performing live in Sweden, where the band opened for Jimi Hendrix in January 1969. Recorded only a few weeks after Barre joined the band, the concert includes songs from Tull's debut album ("A Song For Jeffery" and "My Sunday Feeling"), as well as two songs destined for Stand Up: "Back To The Family" and "Nothing Is Easy." Rounding out the disc are mono single mixes for "Living In The Past" and "Driving Song," plus two radio spots promoting the album.

The DVD includes concert footage of the band performing "To Be Sad Is A Mad Way To Be" and "Back To The Family." The disc also features Steven Wilson's remix of the original album in PCM stereo and DD/DTS 5.1 surround sound; a 96/24 flat transfer of the original stereo master tapes; plus a 96/24 flat transfer of the original mono and stereo mixes of "Living In The Past" and "Driving Song."

Blue Öyster Cult Play 'Agents Of Fortune' On The Audience Network This Friday

Blue Öyster Cult will appear this Friday (September 2) on the Audience Network at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT (DIRECTV Ch 239/U-verse Ch 1114).

The show will feature a live performance of BÖC's seminal album Agents Of Fortune in its entirety, captured at the Red Studios in Los Angeles. The group also sits down with Ted Stryker for an in-depth interview spanning their history.

Bruce Springsteen Breaks His Own Record for Longest E Street Band Show In The U.S.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band celebrated the 41st birthday of the classic album Born to Run by breaking the record for its longest show ever in the United States.

Clocking in at four hours even, the band on Thursday night (Aug. 25) gave the hometown crowd at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey bragging rights to witnessing another musical marathon. Fans were treated to 33 songs, a guest appearance by Rage Against the Machine and Prophets of Rage guitarist Tom Morello, the youngest singer ever to join the Boss on stage for "Waitin' on a Sunny Day" (she was three-years-old), and a marriage proposal during the finale of "Jersey Girl."

Morello -- who joined the band for three songs -- added depth to a politically-charged set that included "Death to My Hometown," "Youngstown," "Jack of All Trades," "American Skin (41 Shots)," and "The Ghost of Tom Joad." Before introducing "Youngstown," Springsteen addressed the current presidential election as "the ugliest I've ever seen."

The Freehold native once again was joined by a string section for the show opener, "New York City Serenade." In a poignant moment, Springsteen dedicated "My City of Ruins" to the earthquake victims in Italy. The evening also had a special guest in attendance-Springsteen's mom, Adele.

Thursday's show shattered his previous U.S. record set on Tuesday night (Aug. 23) of 3:52 and 35 songs. He has one more date to make New Jersey proud and beat his all time-record which he set in Helsinki, Finland, clocking in at 4:05 on July 31, 2012.

In other Springsteen news, the 66-year old rocker gave fans a glimpse of his forthcoming book, Born to Run:Chapter and Verse, on Twitter. Springsteen shared a short video that flips through the pages of the memoir -- momentarily slowing down to showcase the chapters.

Deep Purple's Ian Gillan To Reissue Solo Albums On Vinyl

On October 7, Demon Records will release The Vinyl Collection 1979-1982 box set from Gillan, the band formed in 1978 by Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan. 

The set will feature five albums (seven LPs), including Mr Universe (1979), Glory Road (1980), Future Shock (1981), Double Trouble (1981) and Magic (1982).

'Otis Redding - Live At The Whisky A Go Go: The Complete Recordings' To Be Released

Stax Records and UMC, are pleased to announce the release of Otis Redding – Live At The Whisky A Go Go: The Complete Recordings. In chronological order, this six-CD collection presents the entirety of Redding’s historic performances over three nights at the famed Sunset Strip venue.

The seven sets, recorded Friday, April 8th – Sunday, April 10th,1966, feature the singer’s popular songs of the time, including “Respect,” “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” and his cover of the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

Several of these recordings – all remixed and remastered from the original 4-track analog tapes  – will be made available for the very first time on October 21. In fact, this collection will be the first to offer fans the chance to relive all of the sets in their entirety, including between-song banter by Redding exactly as they were performed. Rounding out the package is a poster, plus new liner notes from Los Angeles-based journalist Lynell George and box set co-producer Bill Bentley.

By the spring of 1966, 24-year-old Otis Redding was a bona-fide star on the R&B and soul radio waves. The singer was enjoying the critical and commercial success of his third studio album, Otis Blue, and was watching his singles cross over to the (typically very white) pop charts.

Redding had yet to be fully embraced by a white audience, and this weekend-long gig in Hollywood, booked at a venue known more for hosting hippies, and launching bands like The Doors, The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, was a shrewd move to introduce Redding to a new market. In fact, Redding would be the first major soul act to perform on the Whisky’s stage.

In her liner notes, Lynell George adds context: “The Strip, like much of 1960s Los Angeles, had invisible but tough to permeate dividing lines...Redding began to see this three-night run as just the right spark to help him jump over all those many lines, from star to superstar, from R&B/soul to pop, from all-black rooms to arenas…”

In the end, these Whisky sets (with Otis' nine-piece band) did prove to be an important step in Redding’s career, and introduced him to the emerging counter-culture of the 60s.

Of the Whisky shows, The Doors' guitarist Robby Krieger said, "I remember standing right in front of the stage for the whole show. I never heard of Otis Redding before and I was amazed at the energy that he created on the stage.”

A year later, Otis would be the star act at the Monterey Pop Festival, sharing a lineup that included Jimi Hendrix and The Who. Tragically, just as his career was reaching its peak, Redding’s life would be cut short in a plane crash, in December 1967.

Redding has been inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, Georgia Music Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame.  He has been honoured with a U.S. Postage stamp and won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

In his liner notes, Bill Bentley recalls, “Redding’s music had a power and urgency that grabbed you by the throat…There wasn’t any other singer like him then, and those of us who had discovered his music knew we were listening to the very essence of what soul music really was.”

Mike Nesmith To Join Monkees For One Final 50th Anniversary Show

The Monkees' Mike Nesmith announced Aug. 19 on his Facebook page that he'll do one more show with fellow Monkees Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork on their 50th anniversary tour -- this time at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles on Sept. 16. The show will make the third time he's performed with Dolenz and Tork on the tour, having previously joined them via Skype in New York City June 1 and on stage in Monterey, California, on Aug. 5.

"Been talking to Micky and Peter about the Los Angeles Pantages Monkees concert and have agreed to come down to play that show with them," he wrote online. "The show is set for September 16th -- which I believe is almost a perfect match for the fifty year anniversary of the TV show -- at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. I am bringing Gretsch, my beautiful, intelligent blonde to help me, and it looks like I'll make it once again."

"I expect it will be fun, and a great way for me to sign out. I see the specter of the multiple Sinatra retirement/farewells -- and this seems like the perfect time for me to step off, sit down and shut up," Nesmith wrote. "What a long strange trip it's been said TGD -- and it looks like I've made it to the end."

Nesmith said he will be busy in 2017 doing promotion for his upcoming Infinite Tuesday book plus his own solo tour. Dolenz and Tork will be doing dates without Nesmith outside of the U.S., including in Australia and New Zealand next year, he said.

Nesmith, Dolenz and Tork got together in the studio and recorded Good Times!, which was released in May.

David Bowie Abandoned Covering Bruce Springsteen After Meeting Him

David Bowie abandoned work on a cover of a Bruce Springsteen song after playing his cover version to the singer, Bowie’s producer has revealed.

Tony Visconti revealed that Bowie planned to cover Springsteen’s song ‘It’s Hard To Be A Saint In The City’ during the sessions for what would eventually become Bowie’s 1975 album Young Americans.

Writing in the new Uncut, Visconti recalled how he asked Springsteen to visit Bowie in the studio in Philadelphia.

Visconti wrote: “David was quite taken by meeting Bruce. We played ‘Saint’ to him and he kept a poker face the whole time. He said nothing when it was finished.

“David took him into another room for a private chat. By the time Bruce left, he was more pleasant and said his goodbyes to the rest of us. David and I never worked on ‘Saint’ after that, although it was finished or re-recorded eventually with someone else.”

Bowie’s version of the song, which appears on Springsteen’s 1973 debut album Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ, eventually appeared on his 1989 box-set Sound + Vision.

The new David Bowie box set Who Can I Be Now? 1974-76, out September 23, includes Young Americans and previously-unreleased album The Gouster, which eventually transformed into Young Americans. It also features new rarities/unreleased album Re-Call 2, the albums Diamond Dogs and Station To Station plus live albums David Live and Live Nassau Coliseum 76.

Pink Floyd Vinyl Reissue Campaign Continues With 'Atom Heart Mother', 'Meddle' & 'Obscured By Clouds'

Pink Floyd Records will continue the reintroduction of the Pink Floyd catalog on vinyl with the release of  Atom Heart Mother, Meddle and Obscured By Clouds on September 23.  Each record has been remastered from the original analogue master tapes.  

The Wall and The Division Bell will also be back in stock on vinyl starting August 26.

Pink Floyd followed their ‘60s albums with their fifth studio album,  Atom Heart Mother in 1970. Featuring the classic lineup of Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason, the LP went on to become the band’s first UK #1 record.

During a short break from touring Atom Heart Mother in 1971, Pink Floyd released the experimental album Meddle.  The LP saw the band move musical direction away from their original psychedelic sound, especially highlighted by the 23-minute track “Echoes” which occupied the entire b-side of the record.

Pink Floyd’s seventh album, Obscured By Clouds was originally recorded as the soundtrack to the French film La Vallee but was released as a stand-alone album in 1972.

The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucerful Of Secrets, More, and Ummagumma are also currently available through Pink Floyd Records.

Ultimate Jam Night To Honor Lemmy

Ultimate Jam Night, the long-running free weekly music program founded by Quiet Riot’s Chuck Wright announced plans to hold a Tribute To Lemmy honoring the famed leader of Motörhead on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at the Whisky A Go Go. The show will be free.

The Tribute To Lemmy precedes the unveiling of a permanent Lemmy statue at the Rainbow Bar and Grill. Created by artist Travis Moore, the unveiling will be on Wednesday, August 24, 2016.  Moore will also display his complete collection of Lemmy art work at the tribute.

Lemmy fans from around the world are expected to descend on the two days of Sunset Strip events. Thousands have already responded that they will be attending.

For the Tribute To Lemmy some of rock's biggest “A list” players are expected to perform. Formal player announcements will be released in the coming days.

10cc Member / Video Pioneer Kevin Godley Launches Official Website With Rare Content

10cc/Godley & Creme legend and renowned video director Kevin Godley has launched his official website at www.kevin-godley.com.

The site features rare and unreleased video and audio content, and comes on the heels of the release of Godley's autobiography Spacecake, an interactive e-book, available for download from iBooks.

“Creatively I'm all over the place," Godley says of his website. "As of now, I'm all over the one place. www.kevin-godley.com isn't a museum it's a meseum. Music, film clips, drawings, facts, figures, histories and futures.”

Amongst the unreleased content found in the website is a new video of the classic 10cc track “Somewhere In Hollywood.”

Four Classic Neil Young Albums To Be Reissued On Vinyl

Reprise Records will release vinyl reissues of four seminal Neil Young albums from the 1970s on September 6th. The four albums - Time Fades Away, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night, and Zuma - have been out of print for many years and are considered by both fans and critics alike to be among the finest work of Young's career and among the most critically acclaimed and influential song-cycles ever.  

These four albums were previously released as a Limited Edition Box Set for Record Store Day in 2014, but this is the first time they have been reissued separately. Each one has been remastered from the original analog master studio recordings at Bernie Grundman Mastering. The artwork features historically accurate reproductions by Young's long-time art director, Gary Burden.

The highly sought-after Time Fades Away was recorded live with Neil Young and The Stray Gators while touring in support of Harvest in 1972, released in the fall of 1973 and filled with material unreleased at that time.

1974's On The Beach was recorded after Tonight's The Night, but ultimately released before the latter hit the shelves. The album's enduring appeal would find the record listed at #40 of The Top 100 Canadian Albums as well as Pitchfork's Top 100 Albums of the 1970s at #65.

Tonight's The Night was recorded in 1973 but not officially released until 1975. The basic core band behind this outing would be known at the time as the Santa Monica Flyers, though album tracks would include those recorded with Crazy Horse as well as The Stray Gators.

Zuma, Young's seventh studio album released in 1975 was co-credited as Neil Young and Crazy Horse and features the "classic" lineup of Crazy Horse with Talbot, Molina & Sampedro plus other contributors.

Graceland To Be Expanded

Graceland officials say a new 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex will be built across the street from Elvis Presley's former home-turned-museum.

Officials with the Memphis-based tourist attraction said Thursday that the $45 million complex will include exhibits that highlight the late singer's life and career exploits in music and film. Presley died in Memphis on Aug. 16, 1977.

Graceland says the entertainment complex is part of a $137 million expansion that includes the construction of a $92 million hotel, The Guest House at Graceland. The 450-room hotel is set to open Oct. 27.

The Commercial Appeal reports that the new complex will replace the existing complex, which contains a car museum, restaurants and memorabilia shops. Graceland says it is set to be completed in the spring of next year.

'Pet Sounds' Film Tells Story Of Beach Boys Seminal Album


Groundbreaking and ahead of its time, Pet Sounds -- the 11th album by The Beach Boys -- was a pioneering feat in production, sound, and songwriting...a work that continues to inspire musicians and fans to this day.

On September 23, 2016, Eagle Rock Entertainment will give fans a behind-the-scenes look at its creation with the release of Classic Albums – Pet Sounds, the latest addition to the acclaimed & award-winning Classic Albums series.  Released on DVD and Blu-ray, this film tells the story behind the making of Pet Sounds, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The DVD / Blu-ray features over 30 minutes of additional interviews not included in the broadcast version, and clocks in at over one and half fascinating hours. Classic Albums – Pet Sounds features cuts from many of the iconic Pet Sounds album tracks including “God Only Knows,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Sloop John B,” “I Know There’s An Answer,” “Let’s Go Away For A While,” and “I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times.”

Pet Sounds was recorded in late 1965 and early 1966 about a year after Brian Wilson had withdrawn from playing live with The Beach Boys in order to concentrate on composing and studio work. While the rest of the band were out on tour, Brian Wilson worked in the studio creating multi-layered compositions with painstaking attention to detail utilizing orchestration, sound effects and unusual instruments.

When the band returned from tour, they went into the studio to add their trademark complex vocal harmonies. The new direction of the music caused some consternation within the group. The program explores the band’s relationship at this time as well as the creation of the music through interviews with all the surviving Beach Boys and others involved in the creation of the album.

The US press didn’t know what to make of the album at first, although it later became acknowledged as both important and influential. Contrarily, the album was immediately acclaimed and commercially successful in the UK, peaking at No.2 in the albums chart and remaining in the Top 10 for 6 months.

Pet Sounds is now universally regarded as one of the finest albums of the sixties and thoroughly merits its place in the Classic Albums series.

Ozzy Osbourne Responds To Bassist Bob Daisley's Lawsuit Over Unpaid Royalties

Ozzy Osbourne is being sued by his former songwriting partner and bassist Bob Daisley over unpaid royalties related to the Prince of Darkness' hit "Crazy Train."

Daisley has filed a suit against Osbourne and his company Blizzard Music Limited seeking $2 million he claims is due to him. But Osbourne's camp denies any wrongdoing and says the Australian musician's legal action is "tantamount to harassment," citing previous lawsuits he has all lost to Osbourne.

As NME reports, Daisley's suit claims that "although royalties have been paid to Daisley over the years, an audit conducted in 2014 showed that Osbourne and his company had been improperly deducting undisclosed fees before distributing royalties to Daisley and improperly withholding Daisley’s rightful share of royalties owed under the publishing agreements for the commercial exploitations of the songs."

"While Mr. Osbourne was benefiting from the songs co-authored by our client, the audit shows that he was systematically short-changing Mr. Daisley," Daisley's lawyer Alan Howard told NME. "Mr. Daisley had no choice but to bring this action to secure his fair share of the proceeds those songs have generated."

In a statement, Osbourne reps responded, saying, "For the past 36 years Mr. Daisley has been receiving bi-annual royalty statements and checks from Blizzard Music, totaling in the millions of dollars, which have been routinely cashed. Mr. Daisley has audited Blizzard Music accounts over the years using several different auditing firms who found no discrepancies. He has previously filed lawsuits in the UK and the US and has lost on each occasion.

"We understand that Mr. Daisley is now in retirement and that these funds are his main source of income, so it is his right to be diligent with his money, but after 36 years, this is tantamount to harassment. We would have hoped that after 36 years that Mr. Daisley would have lost his unhealthy personal obsession and resentment towards Mr. Osbourne's success. Blizzard Music and Mr. Osbourne plan to vigorously defend these proceedings."

Daisley co-wrote on a majority of the songs on Osbourne's debut 1980 solo album, Blizzard of Ozz (including "Crazy Train"), as well as Osbourne's following studio albums through the 1980s: Diary of a Madman, Bark at the Moon, The Ultimate Sin and No Rest for the Wicked. He also played bass on a number of the albums.

Glenn Hughes: First U.S. Solo Tour & 'Bloody Weird' Deep Purple Rock Hall Induction

Glenn Hughes is no stranger to touring North America. The newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has done so as part of Deep Purple as well as with Trapeze and the short-lived Hughes/Thrall project. But hard as it is to believe, the singer-bassist’s upcoming trek -- kicking off Tuesday in Annapolis, Maryland, and wrapping Sept. 3 in Los Angeles -- is Hughes’ first ever under his own name on these shores.

“Let’s just say I was under the radar for a while,” Hughes tells Billboard. “When I came back in the early ’90s, I wasn’t represented appropriately. I always had a career in Europe. I just think when I got sober, I pretty much focused on the United Kingdom or Europe in general and the Far East. But it’s very clear to me that the door is open in America. I love this country. I want to go back to where it all started for me, which is playing in clubs, a lot of people coming into this tiny little place, crammed to the hilt. I just want to go back and get that vibe.”

Hughes will be playing as a trio for the tour, with guitarist Soren Andersen and drummer Pontus Engborg; a keyboard player will be added to the group after Hughes’ new solo album comes out in November through Frontiers Records. But Hughes promises that the trio can handle the repertoire he plans to present during the U.S. dates.

“We can play anything,” he says. “I played [Deep Purple’s] ‘Burn’ with Slash as a trio. If you have the right players, you can do anything. We’ll do 12, 13 songs, and there’ll be some interplay. I’m a jammer; you won’t see the drummer wearing headphones or hear any instruments accompanying us on tape. I jam, and I enforce that in all my songs. It’ll be slightly different each time we play. It’s been like that from Trapeze up till this moment, so I’m not going to change now.”

The tour is certainly fortified by the residual buzz from Hughes’ Rock Hall induction in April with Deep Purple. Though he and his Mark III lineup bandmate David Coverdale did not play with Purple that night, they did take part in the Cheap Trick-hosted finale of Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That a Shame.” But Hughes is still glowing from the experience despite the interpersonal politics of the night.

“I had a great time. It was a nice evening. We met some lovely people, and the Hall of Fame is not a bad place to be in,” says Hughes, whose father sadly died back in England the day of the ceremony. As far as the dynamics within Deep Purple go, he notes, “Let’s just say I think you could see the line between the Mark II and the Mark III. It’s probably the last time you’ll see all of us together at a table. It was just bloody weird. I’m not saying anything disrespectful to anybody about anything. I’m a Deep Purple family member, but there’s no friendship outside of anybody except me and David. It is what it is.”

Hughes is also turning his attention to projects beyond the upcoming tour, which includes a South American swing in September and the United Kingdom and Europe starting in November. He recorded a yet-untitled new album -- the follow-up to 2008’s First Underground Nuclear Kitchen, with Andersen co-producing -- in Copenhagen while playing festivals in Europe during the summer, and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, a regular Hughes collaborator, was able to lay down some tracks while his band was over there as well.

“It’s possibly the heaviest record I’ve ever made,” says Hughes. “I don’t want to confuse it with horns-up heavy; it’s not metal. But it’s definitely f---ing heavy. It’s dense. It’s dark. There’s some aggression on this record. Every bloody track is begging to be played live.”

Meanwhile, Hughes and guitarist Joe Bonamassa have regrouped to start working on material for a fourth Black Country Communion album with drummer Jason Bonham and keyboardist Derek Sherinian. The group had a bit of a falling-out when a tour to promote 2012’s Afterglow didn’t materialize, and while there’s a commitment to make a new album, it’s unclear what the band will do to support it this time around.

“Black Country will be playing, but what I can’t say is how many shows, and where,” says Hughes. “I would think that’ll happen next summer. We all know Joe books a year ahead, and he’s been doing it for 30 bloody years. And I’m doing it on my own now, and I’m in love with playing on my own and going about my own business with my own band and own team. So I totally get what Joe’s doing. But we’ve spoken about doing the record and then we spoke about doing shows, and I would think we’d do some [shows] even if it’s not any kind of big tour.”

Bob Weir Set To Release First Solo Album In 30 Years

For the first time in ten years, Bob Weir will release a new solo record, Blue Mountain, on September 30—marking his debut project since signing with Columbia/Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. 

The release is his first album of entirely original material in thirty years and will be available on CD, 2LP vinyl, and digital.  Producer Josh Kaufman partnered with Weir on the album, which features songwriting collaboration with Josh Ritter and performances from guitarists Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner and bassist Scott Devendorf.

Weir is one of the founding members of the legendary Grateful Dead, which received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. The band also appeared on Forbes' list of top-grossing entertainers and in the early '90s were the highest-grossing concert attraction in the U.S. Since establishing the band in 1965, Weir has become one of rock's finest and most distinctive rhythm guitarists. Earlier this year he received the inaugural Les Paul Spirit Award. Weir has also performed with many other acts including The Other Ones, Kingfish, Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, Ratdog and Furthur, co-led by former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. His first solo album, Ace, was released in 1972. Most recently, Weir has been performing with Dead & Company, which features Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann along with Grammy-winner John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti.

2014 saw the release of The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir, created by Netflix which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Additionally, an Amazon film series based on Steve Parish's 2003 book, Home Before Midnight: My Life on the Road with the Grateful Dead, is currently in development with Weir serving as an executive producer.

The Beatles' 'Revolver' Turns 50

Revolver is, by many accounts, the Beatles' transitional record. It also marked the beginning of what was referred to, in Fab Four lore, as "the studio years." Even as it came out in early August of 1966, the Beatles were winding down their final tour. After over two years of Beatlemania, the band had become "performing fleas" -- competing with a banshee of bloodcurdling screams that continually erupted from a squirming legion of prepubescent girls. Less than a month after the release of their landmark album, the Beatles played their last show on August 29 in San Francisco, California. On that night, a change was definitely in the air for one significant reason: not a single number from Revolver was even played.
Of course, playing Revolver on stage, or for that matter any of the group's subsequent albums, would have been an extremely difficult task to pull off. Tuned in by new sounds, and given Carte Blanche by EMI and Abbey Road, the Beatles were endlessly toying with new musical ideas that were strictly confined to extensive and painstaking recording sessions. With Revolver, the experimentation came to a head. There's the lush orchestration and imagery of "Eleanor Rigby"; the droning backwards guitars of "I'm Only Sleeping"; and the sound effects and wacky ebullience of "Yellow Submarine," the first single featuring Ringo Starr on lead vocals. While John Lennon seemed intent on instilling a hallucinogenic spin onto several of his compositions ("Doctor Robert" and "She Said She Said" are chockfull of drug references), Paul McCartney adopted a more traditional stance, taking a leisurely stroll on "Good Day Sunshine" and bopping to the superb horn arrangements of "Got To Get You Into My Life."
If anyone rose to the occasion it was surely George Harrison. Contributing an unprecedented three cuts to the album, Harrison's songwriting and instrumental prowess cannot be underestimated. "Taxman," the leadoff track, sets a high caliber tone with a wall of harmonies and a spiraling guitar solo. For "Love You To" and Lennon's psychedelic anthem "Tomorrow Never Knows," Harrison's sitar work simply takes the record to another level. The third Harrison song, "I Want To Tell You," only confirms that the so-called quiet Beatle could make plenty of noise when he wanted to. In the book, Virgin All Time Top 1,000 Albums, which compiled more than 200,000 votes from record buyers and music journalists, Revolver ranked as number one. A timeless masterpiece and a scorching document of the Beatles' progress, it's not that difficult to understand why. "Whenever in doubt, turn off your mind, relax, float downstream..."

Kansas Prep Upcoming Tour & Album

Kansas drummer Phil Ehart says he and guitarist Richard Williams weren't sure whether the prog rock group could or should go on after frontman Steve Walsh announced his retirement last year.

"We did look at each other and go, 'OK, this is gonna be interesting,'" Ehart says. "But we decided, 'Let's go do it,' and we did, and we think we've been very successful in getting it together. We hope we've started a new chapter in the book of Kansas."

Kansas is, in fact, busier than it's ever been. The group found a new singer-keyboardist, Ronnie Platt, in short order and also added former lighting director David Manion on keyboards and Zak Rizvi on second guitar. The Prelude Implicit, Kansas' first new album in 16 years, comes out September 23. The opening track, "With This Heart," is featured below, and Kansas' 100-plus tour dates this year include a fall run during which the group will not only promote The Prelude Implicit, but also play its 1976 breakthrough album Leftoverture in its entirety to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary.

"The title of the album, The Prelude Implicit, means without a doubt this is a new musical beginning for the band," Ehart says. "This is the prelude, this is the beginning of a new musical expanse for us. The thing that Richard and I realized is: it's the music, the Kansas music. If the band Kansas stops, then the music stops. Yeah, you can still listen to your CD and pop in a video or something, but it's a great live band, and the fans are not only coming, but they're coming more so now. We're enjoying a real resurgence of sorts, so it's something we want to continue."

Kansas has clearly been energized by the addition of Platt, Manion and Rizvi, whose presence brought the group back into the studio after its long layoff. "With the previous incarnation, it just wasn't meant to happen," Ehart says. "We discussed it. We talked about it, but the enthusiasm wasn't there with certain members. The new material wasn't being written. It didn't want to be written. But once the new personnel came on, boy, it happened overnight. It really ignited." The real surprise, in fact, was Rizvi, an engineer with longtime Kansas producer Jeff Glixman who Ehart approached to helm The Prelude Implicit.

"We never had any intention of him joining the band," Ehart notes. "We invited him to produce the album, and he then said, 'By the way, I've got some songs that I actually wrote for Kansas a couple years ago and then I learned you guys weren't interested in doing anything new, so I kinda shelved them.' So I said, 'Well, yeah, let's take a listen,' and it was just like, boom, it just exploded. We just had no idea he was such an incredible songwriter plus a collaborator as well as an incredible guitar player. I'm looking at Richard and he's looking at me and we're going, 'Why isn't Zak in the band?' So we added him."

The sound of The Prelude Implicit is vintage Kansas, flaunting intricate, orchestrated arrangements, tricky time signatures, sweeping melodies and rich harmonics -- and even a reference to the group's classic "Song for America" in the new track "Rhythm in the Spirit." And the group-written "With This Heart" was chosen to open the album explicitly to make that point. "It's probably the most representative song of Kansas in the past and Kansas in the future -- that's the easiest way to describe it," Ehart explains. "We feel it's a very accessible song that people will listen to and they're going to get it right away. You get to that middle section and, man, that's Kansas with the violin and the odd time signature and all the elements. We wanted something that just screamed 'accessible Kansas,' and we feel the song is that for sure."

Ehart is also confident it won't be another 16 years before the next Kansas album; in fact, Inside Out Music has already asked for a follow-up in early 2018. Meanwhile, Ehart is hoping the new material will sound that much more familiar alongside Leftoverture when Kansas begins the fall tour Sept. 30 in Pittsburgh. The shows will mark the live debut of not only The Prelude Implicit material, but also the Leftoverture track "Question of My Childhood," which the group has never played in concert.

"It's a major undertaking for us," Ehart says. "We've never done Leftoverture in its entirety, and there's songs we haven't played since '75 or '76 that will be in there too. It's gonna be over two hours long, and obviously we've done shows like that back in the day, but this'll be the first time in a long time that we've taken on this type of show, this type of musical extravaganza, playing an awful lot of progressive stuff as well as a lot of the hits and more popular songs. Kansas music is rather a chore to listen to, so we just want to deliver a great show and keep it entertaining."

Starmus is festival of music and astronomy on the beautiful island of Tenerife. It is the brain child Garik Israelian (The astrophysicist who led the team which found the first observational evidence that supernova explosions are responsible for the formation of stellar mass black holes). The most notable was in 2015 where he was joined on stage by Dr Brian May, the iconic guitarist from Queen, where Wakeman and his English Rock Ensemble performed, amongst other tracks, a legendary version of "Starship Trouper."

The Phantom of the Opera

The legendary 1925 Lon Chaney film is brought to life with a specially commissioned Rick Wakeman soundtrack. This is the first time this version of the film has being issued on DVD, as such the images have been fully restored and the sound track remastered. The DVD also has several bonus features; Wakeman commentary, Christopher Lee introduction Rick and the Phantom – featurette, original trailer. Gastank

Gastank was an English television show that aired between 1982–1983 on Channel 4. Hosted by Rick Wakeman the show featured a mix of interviews with 1970s musicians and impromptu performances where the guest artist would join Rick and his house band in playing re-arranged versions of their classic songs, or entirely new pieces created for the show. The format was very informal with the setting likened to a bar where Wakeman would interview the guest over a drink or two followed by their performance in front of a small studio audience sitting in groups at tables. Wakeman would frequently cite the show as an opportunity for musicians from different bands to get the opportunity to work together. During its run, the show featured guests as diverse as Ian Paice, Steve Hackett, Andy Fairweather Low, John Entwistle, Godley and Creme, Eric Burdon and Phil Lynott. Now for the first time on DVD all the episodes of Gastank along with a CD of these now seminal music performances of Wakeman and his guests.

The Complete Gospels (Deluxe Box Set)

The Complete Gospels evolved because Wakeman was asked to perform at an organ recital to raise money for the Camberley United Reform Church, which was in desperate need of a new organ. Rick pondered what to play and the more he thought about it and what the evening should mean, the more he felt that something very special was about to take place. Thoughts of the New Testament kept creeping into his mind and he decided to write an instrumental piece to the settings of the four Gospels. He began working but after a couple of hours realized that there was no way he was going to get across the feelings he wished to portray without singing. The music seemed to cry out for an operatic tenor. Amazingly enough, just a few weeks earlier, Rick had met the famous tenor Ramon Remedios at a charity concert in which they both performed and he plucked up courage to ask him if he would kindly agree to perform the New Gospels with him. The concert was a tremendous success and Ramon’s feeling and understanding of the music moved many people to tears. The Complete Gospels is a limited edition box set containing all the known recordings of the project both audio and visual. Along with a reproduction of a concert program.
