Rolling Stones Win Album Of The Year At U.K.'s Jazz FM Awards

The Rolling Stones were the surprise guests of honor at the U.K.’s Jazz FM Awards, where the veteran rockers walked away with two prizes, including album of the year for comeback set Blue & Lonesome.

“We started off a very long time ago in London trying to play clubs, and those clubs were jazz clubs,” recalled Mick Jagger, collecting the publicly voted prize at London’s Shoreditch Town Hall alongside band mates Ronnie Wood and Charlie Watts earlier Tuesday evening (April 25).

“We used to try and play these jazz clubs and they used to kick us out for playing blues. So this sort of feels full-circle,” the 73-year-old singer went on to say before thanking listeners of Jazz FM for voting.

After collecting the prize, Blue & Lonesome co-producer and Blue Note Records president Don Was paid tribute to the veteran four-piece via a video message, in which he called them “the most hard-working and talented musicians to ever step in front of a microphone.”

“When they kick into gear, the whole becomes far greater than the already gigantic sum of the parts. The whole room catches fire, and that’s exactly what happened during the making of Blue & Lonesome,” Was rhapsodized about the covers collection, which was recorded over three days in London and topped the U.K. albums chart when it was released last fall. In the U.S., it debuted at No. 4 -- the group’s 37th top 10 entry on the Billboard 200 chart.

The Stones also collected the award for blues artists of the year, with Jagger thanking the band's label Universal -- and U.K. chairman and CEO David Joseph, in particular -- for supporting the project from start.

"We were making another record, and we made this [one] sort of in between," recalled Jagger, who admitted having some initial reservations about releasing Blue & Lonesome until his label convinced him otherwise. "I said, 'It's a bit of a minority niche thing,'" the vocalist recalled. "They [Universal] were the ones that said, 'This sounds really great. We want to put it out... Everyone's going to love it.' So I want to thank them for pushing it and helping us and everyone for listening to it."

Lifelong jazz fan Charlie Watts was also presented with a Jazz FM Gold Award in recognition of his contribution to jazz and blues from his friend and British musician Evan Parker. “I should be giving this to him,” the ever-humble drummer said upon collecting the prize.

Other notable winners of the night included American saxophonist Donny McCaslin, who memorably featured on David Bowie’s final studio record, Blackstar, and collected the award for international jazz artist of the year and performed at the ceremony. He dedicated the prize to Bowie.

“When we did Blackstar together, you blew our minds, because you are a one-take guy,” the record’s producer and longtime Bowie confidante Tony Visconti enthused in a congratulatory video speech. “You would just play live in the studio and that would be the take. David and I were not used to such professionalism. If it wasn't for you, Blackstar wouldn’t be the success that it is.”

La La Land and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle was also honored, receiving the Impact Award.

“I’ve been jazz-obsessed my whole life. As a former wannabe jazz musician, I was never quite good enough to make it, so I decided to film jazz musicians instead and try to put jazz onscreen,” the filmmaker said via video speech. “I truly believe in the marriage between jazz and cinema, and I hope to play a small tiny part in keeping that tradition alive.”

Earlier in the evening, British singer Laura Mvula won soul artist of the year, which she followed up with a stirring live performance of “The Man I Love” in tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, whose 100th birthday coincided with the awards show.

Van Morrison was also in attendance, presenting British rhythm, blues and jazz singer Georgie Fame with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Fame closed the show, backed by a four-piece band that included trumpeter Guy Barker.

Gregg Allman Is Not In Hospice

Earlier, we reported that Gregg Allman, singer, keyboardist and de facto leader of the Allman Brothers Band and a solo artist in his own right, had entered hospice. We have since learned that Allman is not in hospice.

After the story broke across media outlets, it was later revealed the musician is resting at his home in Savannah, Ga. — on doctor's orders.

"I want to thank you for all the love that you are sending. Looking forward to seeing everyone again," the 69-year-old Allman said on Facebook. "Keep Rockin'."

It's unclear where the hospice rumors originated, but stories from an Iowa radio station and Relix magazine, along with a concerned tweet from country star Travis Tritt, gained a high profile before Allman's team set the record straight.

Gregg Allman Enters Hospice

Gregg Allman, singer, keyboardist and de facto leader of the Allman Brothers Band and a solo artist in his own right, has reportedly entered hospice. The result of a long history of illnesses, including the need for a liver transplant in 2010.

So far, only a few Twitter posts asking for prayers, and an unconfirmed Facebook post reports the
hospice placement. Allman's history of hard-partying and drug abuse clearly has taken its toll.

According to his website in March, Allman cancelled his entire 2017 tour schedule, after a string
of missed concerts dating back to last Summer. The announcement said he would be seeking treatment for “Serious health Issues,” at the Mayo Clinic.

No official statement from Allman or his management is available at this writing.

Styx To Release First New Studio Album In 14 Years

On June 16, Styx will release a concept album The Mission,  their 16th studio release and first since 2003's Cyclorama. The story chronicles the trials, tribulations, and ultimate triumphs of the first manned mission to Mars in the year 2033.

From the hopeful drive of the record's first single “Gone Gone Gone,” to the stargazing machinations of “Locomotive,” to the rough-riding blaze of glory that permeates the hard-charging “Red Storm,” to the elegiac optimism of the closing track “Mission to Mars,” The Mission succeeds in delivering the greater good from a band that continues to fire on all cylinders, 45 years after signing its first recording contract.

“Gone Gone Gone,” which was released on Friday, is supported by a video already chalking up views on the web. Check it out below.

“The planets truly aligned for The Misson, and I couldn’t be prouder,” says vocalist/guitarist Tommy Shaw, who co-wrote the album’s storyline with longtime collaborator Will Evankovich (Shaw/Blades, The Guess Who). “It’s our boldest, most emblematic album since Pieces Of Eight.”

Founding guitarist James “JY” Young adds, “In the 40th anniversary year of our release of our biggest selling album of all time, Grand Illusion, it just seemed truly appropriate to save our new studio album until this year. Needless to say, I’m very excited.”

The Mission, recorded over a two-year period at Blackbird Studios, The Shop, and 6 Studio Amontillado in Nashville, displays the best aspects of the ongoing in-harmony musical intersection of the six-man Styx team: Shaw, Young, keyboardist/vocalist Lawrence Gowan, original bassist Chuck Panozzo, drummer/percussionist Todd Sucherman, and bassist Ricky Phillips.

The new music was created to reflect the viewpoint of the six-person crew enlisted for the maiden voyage of Khedive, the first entry in a new fleet of nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft underwritten by the Global Space Exploration Program (or GSEP, for short). The Khedive team consists of The Pilot, a fully hands-on, seat-of-the-pants born leader; a First Officer who serves as the team’s big-brother figure; an Engineer who is skeptical of every phase of the mission but remains confident in his own abilities to make the best of any technical situation; and a Top-Shelf Trio of science, astrophysics, and survivalist experts.

“The album feels simultaneously comfortable and new,” observes Gowan. “It’s both entertaining and charming, and a natural progression of our sound.”

"The Mission is a sincere and honest representation of how Styx built upon where we were in the 20th century in order to go somewhere new in the 21st century,” says Panozzo.

The track listing for The Mission is as follows:

1. Overture

New Roger Waters Album Set For Global Release June 2

Roger Waters has announced his first rock album in 25 years, Is This The Life We Really Want?. The album will be available for pre order tomorrow, April 21, and released globally on Friday, June 2 on Columbia Records.

Additionally, the former Pink Floyd bassist will launch his North American Us + Them Tour in Kansas City, MO on Friday, May 26. The tour runs through October 28, concluding in Vancouver, BC.

Roger Waters' last studio album, 1992's Amused To Death, was a prescient study of popular culture, exploring the power of television in the era of the first Gulf War. The long-awaited follow-up, 2017's Is This The Life We Really Want?, is an unflinching commentary on the modern world and uncertain times. Waters' forthcoming LP serves as a natural successor to classic Pink Floyd albums such as Animals and The Wall.

Produced and mixed by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Beck, U2, "From the Basement"), Is This The Life We Really Want? includes 12 new Roger Waters compositions and studio performances.

The physical album release includes a double 180-gram vinyl LP in a gatefold jacket and a 4-panel soft pack CD. All album formats, physical and digital, are available for pre-order starting April 21.

The musicians on Is This The Life We Really Want? include Waters (vocals, acoustic, bass), Nigel Godrich (arrangement, sound collages, keyboards, guitar), Gus Seyffert (bass, guitar, keyboards), Jonathan Wilson (guitar, keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Roger Manning (keyboards), Lee Pardini (keyboards), and Lucius (vocals) with Jessica Wolfe and Holly Proctor.

Tracks on Is This The Life We Really Want? include: "When We Were Young," "Déjà vu," "The Last Refugee," "Picture That," "Broken Bones," "The Life We Really Want," "A Bird In A Gale," "The Most Beautiful Girl," "Smell the Roses," "Wait For Her," "Oceans Apart," and "Part of Me Died."

The lyrics for "Wait for Her" were written by Roger Waters and inspired by an English translation by an unknown author of "Lesson from the Kama Sutra (Wait for Her)," by Mahmoud Darwish.

Blues Music Awards Week Begins May 8 In Memphis

The Blues Foundation invites fans, musicians and music world professionals to come celebrate the blues during Blues Music Awards Week, launching in Memphis on May 8.

A wealth of events will happen throughout the week surrounding the two main attractions: the Blues Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and the Blues Music Awards.

The 38th class of Blues Hall of Fame inductees will be feted at a ceremony May 10 that will take place at the Halloran Centre for Performing Arts (225 S. Main St.) beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Honorees include Johnny Copeland, Henry Gray, Willie Johnson, Latimore, Amy van Singel, Magic Slim, and Mavis Staples, W.C. Handy’s book, Father of the Blues, and a number of classic recordings, among them John Lee Hooker’s album Real Folk Blues, inducted during his centennial year.

A 5:30 p.m. cocktail reception precedes the induction ceremony, which will be highlighted by testimonials, video clips, and acceptance speeches. Tickets cost $100 and are available at Blues Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Tickets.

On May 11, the Blues Music Awards will be presented at Memphis Cook Convention Center (255 N. Main St.). Sugar Ray Norcia leads this year’s contenders with seven nominations, with other blues greats to include quadruple nominee Chicago-based guitarist Toronzo Cannon and triple nominees Bobby Rush, Kenny Neal, William Bell and the Nick Moss Band battling it out for the hotly contested Best Album honors. A complete list of nominees can be found at Blues Music Awards Nominees.

Festivities kick off at 5:30 p.m. in the Convention Center’s Grand Lobby with a pre-awards party, where some BMA nominees will perform. The ceremony, in the Grand Ballroom, includes more nominee performances, a seated dinner and, of course, the presentation of the awards. Tickets are $150 and may be purchased at Blues Music Awards Tickets.

The week’s events begin Monday night, May 8, with a screening of the acclaimed documentary Born in Chicago at Malco’s Studio on the Square (2105 Court Ave.) at 7 p.m. Following the film, legendary Chicago bluesman Corky Siegel will offer a Q&A and a CD signing.

The next night, Siegel will perform a special “Chamber Blues” concert at Lafayette’s Music Room (2119 Madison Ave.) with musicians from IRIS Orchestra. The Blues Foundation is proud to have brokered this partnership between IRIS Orchestra and Corky Siegel to bring chamber blues to Memphis.

On May 10, the Blues Hall of Fame Museum unveils its new exhibit The Rosebud Agency and Mike Kappus: 45+ Years Sharing the Music in its Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise Gallery, showcasing a treasure trove of posters, photos, tour jackets, award-winning CDs, tour passes and more rare memorabilia from Kappus’ five decades as a promoter, agent, manager, talent buyer and GRAMMY® Award winning producer.

A section of the exhibit salutes the centennial anniversary of John Lee Hooker (a longtime Rosebud client). Kappus, a 2014 Blues Hall of Fame inductee and a four-time Keeping the Blues Alive Award recipient, will attend the 2 p.m. opening reception and share some stories from his career.

Visitors can also view a special exhibit of artifacts and personal items representing the 2017 Hall of Fame class. On Friday, May 12 at 2:30 p.m., the Blues Hall of Fame Museum will welcome Holger Petersen for a book signing. Petersen, the longtime host of CBC Radio’s Saturday Night Blues, recently published a new book of musician interviews, Talking Music 2: Blues and Roots Music Mavericks, which contains 25 in-depth conversations with such influential musicians as B.B. King, Solomon Burke, and Steve Miller.

Part of the fun of Blues Music Awards week is enjoying all the music Memphis has to offer. On May 10, a pair of unique BMA-related concerts are scheduled. Big Llou Johnson will throw his 5th Annual Hall of Fame Tribute Jam with fellow blues DJ Bill Wax. For this Blues Foundation fundraising event, the Warehouse (36 GE Patterson Ave.) will transform into a “Juke Joynt” saluting the Hall of Fame’s new inductees as well as the recently departed music icons James Cotton and Chuck Berry.

The following day, May 11, from noon to 2:30 p.m., the Blues Foundation’s HART Fund will present doctors, nurses and other health practitioners to provide a range of health screenings, including full lipid profiles, blood pressure and PSA screenings.

The HART Fund will also partner with MusicCares to provide custom ear molds for musicians who qualify. In addition, the Recording Academy will host a reception celebrating the BMA’s at the Sheraton Memphis Downtown (250 N. Main St.) from 1-3 p.m. To attend this event, please RSVP by emailing

The morning after the Blues Music Awards, the public is invited to the dedication of a statue honoring the great Bobby “Blue” Bland. Blues luminaries and members of the Bland family, including his widow Willie Mae, son Rodd Bland and daughter Patrice Moses, will be in attendance for the statue’s unveiling on the SE corner of S. Main and Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. at 11 am.

Capping off the week’s festivities will be post-BMA events from Memphis and into the Mississippi Delta, to include a special BMA Fest partnership between The Blues Foundation and The Beale Street Music Association on Friday evening, May 12 in which internationally renowned blues musicians, including many BMA nominees, will perform in clubs along Beale Street. $10 wristbands for entry into all venues will be on sale along Beale Street on Friday evening. Additional details and tickets for all of the BMA Week events can be found at BMA Week Schedule.

Hollywood's Ultimate Jam Night Presents 'Metal Has No Color'

Tonight, in an effort to combat national divisiveness, Ultimate Jam Night at the Whisky A Go Go will present “Metal Has No Color,” a night of strength among rock musicians to demonstrate how our nation can unify.

The show will feature the reunion of seminal African-American metal band Sound Barrier and the debut of its new release produced by Tom Morello. Additional artists include Corey Glover of Living Colour, dUg Pinnick of Kings X, and Doc Coyle of God Fordbid. They will be joined by more than 40 top musicians of various ethnicities.

Sound Barrier formed in 1980 and faced racism for their choice in music among both the black and white communities, the band persevered through extreme hatred to create music that influenced generations of metal and rock artists including Tom Morello.

Led by vocalist Bernie Kimbell, guitarist Tracy “Spacey T” Singleton, bassist Stanley E., and drummer Dave Brown, the band appeared on MTV and radio, opening the door for other black musicians to enter the genre. For their April 18th performance, the band will perform its first new music in over 30 years, produced by Tom Morello, with Eric Valentine (Randy Jackson, Erykah Badu, Steve Vai, Steve Lukather) on drums in place of Dave Brown, who passed away in 2013.

Corey Glover is the lead singer for Living Colour, and a noted actor with performances in the acclaimed Oliver Stone film “Platoon,” as well as a headlining role in the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar.” In 1989 Living Colour received the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance for their iconic hit “Cult of Personality.”

“These days our nation is more divided than ever,” said Ultimate Jam Night founder Chuck Wright. “States are separated into ‘red’ or ‘blue,’ and people are increasingly combative. The idea of being ‘re-accomodated’ shouldn’t exist because individual civility should be cherished. We believe its high time for people to come together, and music has always held great healing power. We’re proud that Ultimate Jam Night can continue to demonstrate how race and separation can be set aside for common understanding and joy.”

Admission for Ultimate Jam Night is always free. Doors open at 8 pm. The event will be broadcast worldwide via Zinna.TV. For more information, visit or

Guitar Virtuoso Allan Holdsworth Passes

Allan Holdsworth, hailed by his peers as one of the most technically gifted guitarists of his time, has died at the age of 70. His passing was announced Sunday (April 16) by family members on social media.

The innovative guitar hero shaped his reputation through the 70s as a master of prog-rock and jazz fusion with such acts as Soft Machine, Gong and U.K., but never quite struck the commercial success he richly deserved.

His signature two-handed finger tapping style influenced the best in the business, from Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Tom Morello, Peter Frampton to Joe Satriani and Eddie Van Halen, who called him “the best, in my book” and “so damned good that I can't cop anything.” In a later interview, the Van Halen axeman declared: “Holdsworth is so damned good that I can’t cop anything. I can’t understand what he’s doing," and in in 2015 he told Billboard that Holdsworth was the last “new” guitarist he liked.

As news of his death spread, Frampton remembered Holdsworth as a “brilliant unique guitar master player,” and Satriani tweeted, “You remain an enormous inspiration to me. Your beautiful music will live on forever.”

Born on Aug. 6, 1946, in Bradford, England, Holdsworth didn't pick up the guitar until he was 17, but he proved to be a quick learner. After moving to London, Holdsworth kicked off his recording career in the late 60s with the band ‘Igginbottom and through the 70s honed his craft with the likes of Tempest, Soft Machine, the Tony Williams Lifetime project, French-English outfit Gong, and U.K..

Holdsworth embarked on a solo career which launched proper with the solo album I.O.U., from 1982, and the following year earned a Grammy nomination for his EP Road Games (for best rock instrumental performance). Throughout the decade, he endorsed the SynthAxe guitar synthesizer and dabbled with headless guitars, resulting in his own signature headless model, initially created by Carvin and then under the Kiesel moniker.

As humble as he was talented, Holdsworth recorded a dozen albums from 1982-1993, all of which are explored on a retrospective boxed set titled The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever, which dropped earlier this month through Manifesto Records (he apparently wasn't taken with the album's title, instead deferring that honor to other guitar heroes).

Holdsworth reportedly died Saturday (April 15), though the cause has not been announced. His daughter Louise paid tribute to the guitar great. “It is with heavy hearts that we notify everyone of the passing of our beloved father,” she posted on Facebook. “We would appreciate privacy and time while we grieve the loss of our dad, granddad, friend and musical genius. We will update close friends and family when service arrangements have been made and will notify the public of an open memorial service, which all would be welcome. We are undeniably still in shock with his unexpected death and cannot begin to put into words the overwhelming sadness we are experiencing. He is missed tremendously.”

“The Dirty Dozen Tour” is inspired by the classic 1960s movie of the same name. “Rehearse them, Excite them, Arm them - then turn them loose on the Fans!” It will be the band’s first North American Headline Tour where demand has been steadily building after the success of their third album Make Some Noise.

“We're all very excited for our very first North American headline run,”singer John Corabi exclaimed. “We're kicking it all off on August 10th in Chicago and ending it in "Sin City" Las Vegas!!! You guys have been amazing with all of your support and requests for shows here, so we're giving it to you Live And Louder, and "down and dirty" on "The Dirty Dozen Tour 2017"!!!! See ya on the road kids!!!”

Before being turned loose on North American audiences, the troops will be fresh from playing some of the most prestigious & high profile UK & EU Rock Festivals coupled with a series of headline club shows, dates in Japan to then make their long-awaited debut in South America. From South America it’s back to one of the EU’s largest Festivals “Woodstock Poland,”to be part of a “Concert Inspired by Freedom” which will see the band perform with a 60-piece orchestra.

The “Live & Louder” - World Tour 2017 will visit the following countries: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, United Kingdom, Holland, France, Belgium, Hungary, Czech Republic, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Poland, Canada and the USA.

Live And Louder will be available in multiple deluxe formats & perfectly captures the awesome vibe of their supreme, sweat drenched, roof-raising live sets, recorded on a heady high at the end of an unbelievable 2016. The result, once again mixed by Anthony Focx (Aerosmith, Bad Company), is an absolute stunner!

Live And Louder really helps define The Dead Daisies’ sound,” guitarist Doug Aldrich says. “Like bands I've been involved with co-producing (Whitesnake and Dio), we have a great team that makes sure our sound is consistent and we are always looking to pump it up. Onstage I just play guitar but our crew and production team are very instrumental in capturing what happens on stage. Now get out there and go Live & Louder with us this summer!!”

Special Guests on this run will be The Dives, which the band made instant friends with on the previous years’ KISS Kruise and who will add their own blend of signature rock and roll to the fiery package.

Graham Nash Brings Photo Exhibit To NAMM’s Museum Of Making Music

In a star-studded event on last Saturday (April 8), singer Graham Nash, community champions and music education patrons came together to “Play it Forward” at NAMM’s Museum of Making Music’s (MoMM) gala fundraiser event, “An Evening with Graham Nash.”

The annual event was attended by nearly 170 guests, and raised over $70,000 in donations that will further the MoMM’s mission to offer educational immersion opportunities, exhibitions, hands-on experiences, and live performances that inform and inspire guests on how musical instruments impact popular culture and connect lives.

Guests of the event enjoyed a cocktail and dessert reception, the opportunity to preview “The Photography of Graham Nash” photo exhibit, as well as bid on a live auction filled with items provided from generous museum donors.

The evening’s main event included an hour-long concert performance by Nash, accompanied by guitarist Shane Fontayne (Lone Justice, Sting, Bruce Springsteen). Nash, a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy Award winner  with Crosby Stills and Nash and The Hollies, performed hits spanning his career, including “Bus Stop,” “Marrakesh Express,” “Wasted on the Way,” “Teach Your Children,” and many others.
Of the museum, Nash shared, “[The museum] truly celebrates the organic nature of music and for all of us who believe in music’s healing power, it’s a very important place. There’re many studies today that prove this; this idea that music actually has therapeutic properties [and] that’s why I’m so happy to be affiliated with the Museum of Making Music. They understand the power and importance of music. Not just for the sheer joy that it gives us, but how it can help us, too.”

The gala event officially launched “The Photography of Graham Nash,” a new gallery exhibit featuring 29 photographs of famed artists photographed by Nash, including Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, Jerry Garcia, Judy Collins (with Stephen Stills), Neil Young, Cass Elliot, Taj Majal, David Crosby and Jackson Browne, along with some of Nash’s most significant quotes and song lyrics, blending his love of photography and music into one setting. The exhibit will be on display until August 31, 2017 and is included in the cost of admission.

Donations raised at the gala will also help offset the museum’s annual operating costs as it continues to provide access to visitors from around-the-world wishing to discover a century of instrument innovations that shaped American popular music. The museum offers a unique, memorable and educational adventure to 40,000 visitors each year by displaying over 500 vintage instruments and hundreds of audio and video clips from industry luminaries. Additionally, the museum’s year-round music education programs are crucial to thousands of children, adults and seniors. These efforts include the museum's Title One Fieldtrip Program, an annual venture that provides free access to the museum for low-income students, as well as a scholarship program that enables fixed-income adults and seniors the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.
“Sharing the vibrant history of the music products industry would not be possible without the generous spirit of NAMM members and our many community donors,” said Carolyn Grant, Executive Director of the MoMM. “I am deeply grateful to those who share in our vision and strive to make the world a more music place, one person at a time.”

The gala received generous support from museum members, patrons, NAMM members and local businesses. Major sponsors included Securematics and Zuza Marketing/Printing/Mailing, South Coast Winery, Stone Brewing Co., and Morrison Hotel Gallery Fine Art and Photography. Additional support was provided from Birch Aquarium, Carlsbad Fire Department, Cobra/Puma Golf, Disneyland, Fratelli’s, Fortis Fitness and Strength Training, Fundraising Rides, H2Odyssey, Pamela Underwood Expressive Arts Studio, Sandy Radom Photography, Stellaluna, The Country Club at Rancho Bernardo, The Crossings at Carlsbad, Vista Valley Country Club, Fortis/YOGALUX, and many other generous donors who helped make the evening a great success.

New Ian Anderson Album Hits #1; Jethro Tull's 'Songs From The Wood' To Be Reissued

Lots of great news from the Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull camp.

First up...Ian Anderson and the Carducci Quartet’s Jethro Tull: The String Quartets has reached the number one position again on the Billboard Classical Album charts. In 1995, Anderson's album Divinities topped the same chart. Jethro Tull enjoyed similar success in the 70s when 1972’s Thick As A Brick  and 1973's A Passion Play both went to the top of Billboard's album charts. Apparently, going to Number One happens every 22 years for Anderson, so be prepared for a hit in 2039.

Jethro Tull: The String Quartets debuted at #16 on the Independent charts, and #80 on Billboard’s album chart. In the UK, the album entered at #2 on Classical, #56 on Album, and #6 for Independent.

The album features 12 re-imagined Tull classics, allowing Tull fans and classical music connoisseurs to enjoy the band's vast catalog in a new way.

Meanwhile, Rhino is preparing to reissue yet another expanded version of one of Jethro Tull's classic 70s albums, cleaned up and sonically revitalized by Steven Wilson. Songs From The Wood, Jethro Tull's tenth album, was inspired by Anderson's departure to a more rural environment in a transition which bore clear influence on the writing and recording process, with the band notably doffing a cap to British folklore and countryside.

Songs From The Wood: The 40th Anniversary Edition will be available as a limited edition triple-CD and double-DVD set on May 19.

The original album has been remixed in stereo by Steven Wilson for the CD, while his 96/24 LPCM and 5.1 DTS, AC3 Dolby Digital surround mixes will appear on DVD. Of course, there will also be plenty of bonus material as well, including unreleased tracks, alternates, outtakes and previously unseen footage of the band from a live concert at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland on November 21, 1977.

Completing the set is a beautiful 96 page book which contains extensive writing on the history of the album and how it came to be. Martin Webb reflects on the writing, recording and touring of the album while Anderson provides a track-by-track annotation of the album and associated recordings. Alongside lyrics, there's an interview with assistant engineer Trevor White, relevant photos and imagery, and a full recording and touring chronology.

Golden Anniversary Of The Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper' Album To Be Celebrated With Special Edition Reissues

It was 50 years ago this June 1st when the Beatles astonished and delighted the world, ushering in the Summer of Love with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a groundbreaking masterwork that became popular music’s most universally acclaimed album.

To salute the occasion, the Beatles will release a suite of lavishly presented Sgt. Pepper Anniversary Edition packages on May 26 (Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe). The album is newly mixed by Giles Martin and Sam Okell in stereo and 5.1 surround audio and expanded with early takes from the studio sessions, including no fewer than 34 previously unreleased recordings.

“It’s crazy to think that 50 years later we are looking back on this project with such fondness and a little bit of amazement at how four guys, a great producer and his engineers could make such a lasting piece of art,” says Paul McCartney in his newly-penned introduction for the Sgt. Pepper Anniversary Edition.

Sgt. Pepper seemed to capture the mood of that year, and it also allowed a lot of other people to kick off from there and to really go for it,” Ringo Starr recalls in the Anniversary Edition’s book.

For Record Store Day on April 22, Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe will release an exclusive, limited edition seven-inch vinyl single of The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane,” among the first songs recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions, which began in November 1966. Rather than being held for inclusion on the album, the two songs were released as a double A-sided single in February 1967. Amidst intense media speculation about the band’s next move, the single bridged what was then considered a long gap between the Revolver album, released in August 1966, and Sgt. Pepper, which followed 10 months later.

This is the first time Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has been remixed and presented with additional session recordings, and it is the first Beatles album to be remixed and expanded since the 2003 release of Let It Be… Naked. To create the new stereo and 5.1 surround audio mixes for Sgt. Pepper, producer Giles Martin and mix engineer Sam Okell worked with an expert team of engineers and audio restoration specialists at Abbey Road Studios in London. All of the Anniversary Edition releases include Martin’s new stereo mix of the album, which was sourced directly from the original four-track session tapes and guided by the original, Beatles-preferred mono mix produced by his father, George Martin.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Anniversary Edition releases include:
  • A CD featuring the new ‘Sgt. Pepper’ stereo mix, complete with the original U.K. album’s “Edit for LP End” run-out groove.
  • Deluxe: Expanded two-CD and digital package features the new stereo album mix on the first CD and adds a second CD of 18 tracks, including previously unreleased complete takes of the album’s 13 songs, newly mixed in stereo and sequenced in the same order as the album. The second CD also includes a new stereo mix and a previously unreleased instrumental take of “Penny Lane” and the 2015 stereo mix and two previously unreleased complete takes of “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
  • Deluxe Vinyl:  Expanded 180-gram 2LP vinyl package features the new stereo album mix on the first LP and adds a second LP with previously unreleased complete takes of the album’s 13 songs, newly mixed in stereo and sequenced in the same order as the album.
  • Super Deluxe:  The comprehensive six-disc boxed set features:
    • CD 1:  New stereo album mix
    • CDs 2 & 3:
      • 33 additional recordings from the studio sessions, most previously unreleased and mixed for the first time from the four-track session tapes, sequenced in chronological order of their recording dates
      • A new stereo mix of “Penny Lane” and the 2015 stereo mix of “Strawberry Fields Forever”
    • CD 4:
      • Direct transfers of the album’s original mono mix and the “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane” singles
      • Capitol Records’ U.S. promotional mono single mix of “Penny Lane”
      • Previously unreleased early mono mixes of “She’s Leaving Home,” “A Day In The Life,” and “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” (a mix thought to have been erased from a tape in 1967, but discovered during archive research for the anniversary edition)
    • Discs 5 & 6 (Blu-ray and DVD):
      • New 5.1 surround audio mixes of the album and “Penny Lane” by Giles Martin and Sam Okell, plus their 2015 5.1 surround mix of “Strawberry Fields Forever”
      • High resolution audio versions of the new stereo mixes of the album and “Penny Lane” and of the 2015 stereo mix of “Strawberry Fields Forever”
      • Video features:  4K restored original promotional films for “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Penny Lane,” and “A Day In The Life;” plus The Making of Sgt. Pepper, a restored, previously unreleased documentary film (broadcast in 1992), featuring insightful interviews with McCartney, Harrison, and Starr, and in-studio footage introduced by George Martin
The album’s vibrant artwork, including its extravagant pop art cover which finds the Beatles surrounded by a crowd of heroes in a 3D collage, was created by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth in collaboration with the band. The original artwork is showcased across the suite of Anniversary Edition releases, including the album’s pull-out sheet of Sgt. Pepper cutouts. Housed in a 12-inch by 12-inch box with lenticular artwork and two bonus posters, the six-disc Super Deluxe set is presented with a 144-page hardcover book.
