Chuck Berry Documentary, Biopic In Development

Chuck Berry, who penned such iconic rock and roll anthems like “Johnny B. Goode” and “Roll Over Beethoven,” is the subject of an upcoming  documentary and biopic that are being produced in cooperation with his estate and widow Themetta Berry. The songwriter, singer and guitarist who passed on March 17, 2017, was previously profiled in Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll, a 1987 documentary film directed by Taylor Hackford that featured performances from two 1986 concerts celebrating Berry's 60th birthday.

Cardinal Releasing Ltd, which has previously produced films on music legends including Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King and Nat King Cole, has already begun work on the documentary titled Chuck! The Documentary and is set to follow up work on the biopic with pre-production beginning in the summer once work on the documentary has wrapped.

In a statement, director Jon Brewer said: "I am very privileged to be able to produce and direct this fully authorized and official story of the legendary Chuck Berry.”

Berry, one of the progenitors of rock and roll and one of the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had a complicated personal life off stage that included a four month jail sentence for tax evasion and a 1959 arrest for violations of the Mann Act for bringing a 14-year-old girl across state lines for alleged “immoral purposes.”

Pat Benatar, Melissa Etheridge, B-52s Lead The Way At She Rocks Awards

Photos by Maria Huizinga

Dedicated to celebrating women working in the music industry, the sixth annual She Rocks Awards was held on Friday, January 26, at the House of Blues in Anaheim during the 2018 NAMM Show.  Presented and produced by the Women’s International Music Network (WIMN), Pat Benatar, Melissa Etheridge, the B-52s and Exene Cervenka of X were among those honored.

WIMN founder and awards co-host Laura B. Whitmore talked about the organization’s ongoing mission. “I feel like we are finally being heard,” she told the audience. “From the beginning, the She Rocks Awards has focused on bringing women together to share, to empower and to enlighten. We must continue to build on the progress we have made. As we advocate, educate and inspire women in the music industry, we seek to bring women together to create a larger voice.”

Whitmore and co-host and KROQ Los Angeles DJ Kat Corbett headed up the presentations to a wide array of female musicians and music industry movers and shakers. Unfortunately, Grammy Award winner Pat Benatar was ill and did not attend, so she wasn’t there to receive her Legend Award.

Melissa Etheridge, who received the Icon Award, said in her acceptance speech: “What a cool thing, She Rocks. People are asking a lot of questions about women these days. They come up and say, ‘Did you guys ever have any trouble in rock and roll?' There wasn’t enough of us to have trouble.”

At one point, she recalled visiting radio stations with her record rep in the 80s and hearing programmers say, "Sorry, but we’re already playing a woman." She added, "Even though it has been next to impossible being a woman in the music business, we have succeeded and we have infiltrated every aspect of the music industry. We play the guitars and we rock; we play the drums and we rock; we work at the record companies and we rock; we discover the artists and we rock. We are a force to be reckoned with!”

The B-52s’ Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson accepted the Vanguard Award, while Exene Cervenka, co-lead singer/songwriter of legendary punk band X, received the Dreaming Out Loud Award. Also receiving well-deserved recognition via the Inspire Award was female band Fanny, one of the first notable female rock groups to to release an album on a major label (in 1970). their fans included the late David Bowie. Now known as Fanny Walked the Earth — with an eponymous new album coming in March.

She Rocks also honored females working in other facets of the music industry. including instruments, audio equipment, studio management, merchandising and media. Among this circle was Karla Redding-Andrews. The daughter of soul legend Otis Redding and executive director for the Otis Redding Foundation was saluted with the Champion Award for the foundation’s philanthropic endeavors, including music education. The evening ended with a rousing performance of Redding’s “Respect," featuring the honorees and presenters backed by the evening’s female house band, Rock Sugah.

Award presenters included Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (Steely Dan, Doobie Brothers), Garbage’s Shirley Manson, singer/songwriter Sarah Jaffe, actress Ann Magnuson and Gretsch Company executive VP/CFO Dinah Gretsch. Integrated throughout the show were performances by Olivia Rox, the Command Sisters and Laura Clapp, among others. A silent auction featured items such as an Etheridge autographed acoustic guitar, a private tour of Capitol Studios, four hours of recording time with an engineer at the Republic Records studios and an online course with Berklee College of Music.

Grateful Dead's Bob Weir Honored At 2018 NAMM Show

Jesse Grant/Getty Images
At the opening Breakfast of Champions session of The 2018 NAMM Show on Thursday, January 25, legendary musician, songwriter, GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and original member of the Grateful Dead Bob Weir was presented with the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) “Music for Life” award. The award honors his inspiring five decades-long career of influencing musical styles, sound design and the music business, as well as the many risks Weir and the Dead took along the way to become the iconic band that they became.

The award was presented by NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond, who introduced Weir with acknowledgement of his pioneering spirit, which has helped define popular music over the last 50 years: “The Grateful Dead inspired a movement by taking incredible risks musically, culturally and in terms of how they approached the music business,” said Lamond. “They did so out of a passion for music making and, as a result, continue to inspire musicians to this day. We’re honored to present Bob Weir with the Music for Life Award for this his unabashed passion for music making, support for music education and so many more achievements in his long career.”

Weir offered a bit of creative wisdom for the audience of music professionals. “If you’re always going for it, the muse is always leading you in some direction. If you have faith in your muse, you’re going to get somewhere — if you put shoulder to the wheel. Every artist of any stripe is a storyteller, and the way you weave it together represents what makes life worth living.”

Risk is a term that has defined the duration of Weir’s career as one of rock’s finest and most distinctive rhythm guitarists. He’s currently a member of Dead & Company, which features Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, along with singer-songwriter John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti.

Weir will tour this spring with fellow Grateful Dead member Phil Lesh for special duo performances, at Radio City Music Hall in New York, Wang Theater in Boston and Chicago Theater in Chicago. Weir has also recorded and performed with many acts including Bob Weir and the Campfire band which features members of The National, The Other Ones, Kingfish, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, Ratdog and Furthur (co-led by Phil Lesh).

Weir recently struck a partnership with D’Angelico Guitars for the Bob Weir signature SS model, which won the Editor’s Choice Award for Guitar, Amps and Accessories at the 2017 Summer National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), while Music and Sound Retailer recently named the model Electric Guitar of the Year for 2017. Musical Merchandise Review (MMR) also nominated the Premier Bob Weir SS for Dealer’s Choice Award in the Electric Guitar category. The company says “his penchant for risk-taking in the world of instruments is akin to his contributions to music—he's restless in the best of ways. Working alongside Bob to design the guitar was a masterclass in dedication to innovation, yielding an instrument equally impressive in versatility, aesthetic, and craftsmanship."

Weir has also partnered with Pigtronix to develop Bob Weir Real Deal Acoustic Preamp. Pigtronix, says he has a “one-of-a-kind sonic ambition” which has “has challenged the Pigtronix sound design team to reach beyond the realm of conventional guitar effects.”

In 2016, Weir received the inaugural Les Paul Spirit Award and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association. Also in 2016, Weir released Blue Mountain on Columbia/Legacy/ROAR, his first album of solo material in more than 10 years and his first album of entirely original material in more than 30 years. The album received raves from critics, including NPR, which praised its “stately, autumnal, metaphysical cowboy songs.”

The “Music for Life” award is NAMM’s highest honor and recognizes individuals or organizations that exemplify NAMM’s vision of music making as a precious element of daily living for everyone. Past recipients have included business leaders, public officials and musicians, including Graham Nash, Stevie Wonder, Yoko Ono, Henry Mancini, Smokey Robertson and the 2017 recipient, Robbie Robertson. It is awarded each January during the global music products gathering, The NAMM Show, held in Anaheim, California.

“It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring,” Diamond said in a statement on his website. “I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years.”

Diamond, who turns 77 this week, said he planned to continue writing and recording music, but would no longer play to live audiences. Rick Wakeman's 'The Real Lisztomania' Limited Edition Box Set Available For Pre-Order

Keyboardist and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Rick Wakeman's The Real Lisztomania Limited Edition Box Set is now available for pre-order. This is an extremely rare find as the master tapes were long since considered destroyed. Back in 1975, Wakeman was asked to oversee and compose a lot of the music for the film Lisztomania, which was directed by Ken Russell. The musician was also given a part in the film in which he played the god Thor.

A soundtrack album was later produced by Wakeman, which was subsequently turned down by A&M Records, much to his disgust. There were huge disputes going on at the time and they basically hated everything he produced even though he was selling albums for them in multi-millions. It is not commonly known that they actually turned down Journey To The Centre Of The Earth initially and it was only by forcing the contract that Wakeman had signed with them, that it was ever released. They also initially didn't want to release The Six Wives Of Henry VIII until some vocals were put on it!

After rejecting the Lisztomania soundtrack master, A&M then produced a soundtrack of their own which had very little of Wakeman on it and yet they still thoughtfully put his name on the front cover along with that of Roger Daltrey. The keyboardist was furious to say the least and hated the soundtrack album vehemently and told the press accordingly. It sold accordingly well. However, the movie went on to become one of the biggest cult films of all time. To find this original soundtrack is quite unbelievable as there was only one master ever in existence and yet somehow it has managed to survive more than 25 years in a box amongst some old football shorts. It was originally released as part of the fabled Treasure Chest box set of a limited edition of 500 on the Voiceprint label, copies of going for over £500 on eBay.

The tapes have been carefully re-mastered and all concerned believe that this is truly something special. Wakeman's idea was always to try and produce a completely different type of soundtrack and he produced this one by making it into a form of story with intermittent hilarious narration that runs throughout spoken by Paul Nicholas.

Guest vocalists include Roger Daltrey, Paul Nicholas & Linda Lewis. It may be more than 40 years since these altercations, but as they say, “Better late than never.” It's certainly a very different soundtrack to any that have ever been produced in the world of film music. It's very funny too, which is perhaps what we have come to expect from Rick with humor and music in one.

The box set, as well as other items, available will be shipped from UK for early April 2018

Kinks, Zombies Bassist Jim Rodford Passes

Bassist Jim Rodford died at the age of 76 on Saturday, January 20.

The British musician, who spent 18 years with the Kinks, also played with Argent and The Zombies.

His cousin and fellow bandmate, Rod Argent, paid tribute on Facebook to the "magnificent bass player," who died following a fall on the stairs.

He also highlighted his commitment to the music scene in St Albans where he had lived all his life, playing with family members in The Rodford Files.

"He gave us absolutely unflagging commitment, loyalty and unbelievable energy... Our gratitude is beyond measure," Argent said.

"To the end, Jim's life was dedicated to music," Argent continued, in a lengthy tribute posted on Saturday. "He will be unbelievably missed."

The Kinks' Dave Davies paid tribute to his former colleague, who played with the band between 1979 and 1993, writing that he was "devastated by Jim's sudden loss".

"I'm too broken up to put words together, it's such a shock, I always thought Jim would live forever in true rock and roll fashion - strange - great friend, great musician, great man - he was an integral part of the Kinks later years. RIP," he wrote on Twitter.

Rodford was playing with The Bluetones when his cousin, Argent, first asked him to join his then-band The Zombies, alongside singer Colin Blunstone.

Rodford declined, but Argent in his Facebook tribute said he was "inextricably bound to the story of The Zombies" and credited him as being "an enormous enabler" for the band who went on to have a major US hit with She's Not There in 1964.

After a stint with the Mike Cotton Sound, the bassist did eventually agree to join his cousin as a founding member of Argent, who are best remembered for the songs "Hold Your Head Up" and "God Gave Rock and Roll to You."

When the Argent split in 1976, Rodford was recruited by the Kinks after the departure of John Dalton, performing on every album from 1979's Low Budget to 1993's Phobia.

"It is with deep sadness that we have learned that Jim Rodford passed away - he toured and recorded with the Kinks for many years and will be greatly missed. He was much loved by all of us," said an official statement from the Kinks on Twitter.

Rodford joined the revived Zombies in 1999 alongside his son, drummer Steve Rodford, touring until his death, most recently in Florida this month.

He was presented with an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Hertfordshire last year.

Michael Des Barres Premieres New Video Single "Living In The USA" On YAHOO! Music

British musician, actor and broadcaster Michael Des Barres has today released his first single, "Living in the USA," on Wicked Cool Records, partnering with YAHOO! Music to exclusively premiere the song's controversial new video, here, directed by Marianne Spellman and produced by Kitty Page for Humble Servant Productions. Check out the video at YAHOO! Music.

The single is available everywhere digitally as well as on a limited run of 45s on red vinyl, with the A-side of the original composition of "Living in the USA," and on the B-side, a cover of Bob Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody," which deals with similar themes. Des Barres, born in England and raised in the United States, says, "To turn away from an accident and not help is analogous to not addressing the greed, elitism and injustice that is happening in our beautiful country and around the world. This is why I wrote 'Living in the USA.'"

As the host of Little Steven's Underground Garage on SiriusXM Radio Channel 21, Des Barres is heard by millions of listeners five days a week (8-11am ET and 9pm-midnight PT). Des Barres has sold over 7 million albums as both a recording artist and songwriter.

Known as a glam rock icon, Des Barres was the front man of the bands Silverhead and Detective, personally signed by Jimmy Page to Swan Song records. From 1982 to 1984, Michael was a member of Chequered Past, which included Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols, and Clem Burke (who also plays drums on "Living in the USA") and Nigel Harrison of Blondie. In 1983, Michael co-penned the song "Obsession," a number one hit in 27 countries for LA new wave group Animotion. Des Barres was also the touring singer for the Duran Duran spin-off group, The Power Station, performing with them at Live Aid.

More recently, Des Barres narrated the one-night only performance of Frank Zappa's legendary 200 Motels with the LA Philharmonic and released a live follow-up to his 2012 album Carnaby Street called Hot 'n Sticky. Rolling Stone magazine called out Michael's songwriting in their "Top 25 Albums of 2015" naming his song, "Pain Killer" as a highlight of the critically acclaimed album, Introducing Darlene Love. Des Barres' last album, The Key To the Universe was released by F.O.D Records in February 2015.

Over the past five decades, Des Barres has also appeared in more than 40 feature films such as To Sir With Love with Sidney Poitier, Pink Cadillac with Clint Eastwood, The Man From Elysian Fields with Mick Jagger, and Diary of a Sex Addict with Rosanna Arquette, as well as over 150 hours of American television shows such as NCIS, Bones, CSI, Seinfeld, Frasier, Roseanne and Melrose Place, and as the infamous assassin Murdoc on MacGyver, a role which  Des Barres will reprise as he guest stars on the  MacGyver re-boot on February 2 on CBS.

Wicked Cool Records evolved out of "Little Steven" Van Zandt's weekly syndicated radio show and SiriusXM channel Little Steven's Underground Garage. Van Zandt founded the label as a way to further support new rock & roll that wasn't receiving the recognition it deserved. Among the label's releases are 10 critically acclaimed compilations including Halloween A Go-Go, Christmas A Go-Go and The Coolest Songs In The World Volumes 1-8, featuring music from the Underground Garage. In 2016, Wicked Cool Records began a unique distribution deal and partnership with The Orchard encompassing both the label's back catalog and all new Wicked Cool releases, releasing albums from WYLDLIFE, Soraia and more.

"Living in the USA" and "Gotta Serve Somebody" are available via all digital outlets, including iTunes and Amazon. Limited edition red vinyl 45s are available at

Previously Unreleased Jimi Hendrix Version Of "Mannish Boy" Premieres On BBC

Today, engineer/producer Eddie Kramer premiered “Mannish Boy” by Jimi Hendrix on BBC Radio 6 Music’s Shaun Keaveny Breakfast Show. The track is currently available globally on all digital platforms for purchase and streaming.

“Mannish Boy” is a foretaste of Both Sides of the Sky, the new Hendrix album set for release March 9 from Experience Hendrix L.L.C. and Legacy Recordings.

Listen to “Mannish Boy” below.
Muddy Waters’ “Mannish Boy” was reworked by the trio that would come to be known as Band of Gypsys (Jimi Hendrix, bassist Billy Cox, drummer Buddy Miles) during their first ever recording session on April 22, 1969 at the Record Plant in New York. This lineup would make its public debut during four performances at the Fillmore East on New Year’s Eve 1969 and New Year’s Day 1970, from which the live albums Band of Gypsys (1970) and the acclaimed Machine Gun (2016) are derived.

Both Sides of the Sky, the album home of “Mannish Boy,” is the final volume in a trilogy of albums intended to present the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in Jimi Hendrix’s archive. It follows Valleys of Neptune (2010) and People, Hell and Angels (2013), which both cracked the top 5 on Billboard’s Top 100 album chart. Surviving Motörhead Members To Reunite For Lemmy Tribute Gigs

The last surviving members of Motörhead are set to reunite for a series of Lemmy tribute concerts.

The Motörhead frontman died on December 28, 2015, from congestive heart failure and cardiac arrhythmia. He had also been battling prostate cancer. He had just turned 70 four days before.

“Fast” Eddie Clarke, the last surviving member of the original and best-known Motörhead lineup, passed away last week on January 10, after suffering from pneumonia.

Guitarist Phil Campbell and drummer Mickey Dee are now set to reunite to play a series of special shows in honor of their late frontman. Campbell played in the band from 1984 – 2015 while Dee was a member from 1992 – 2015.

“It’s just gonna be a few select shows,” Campbell revealed in a recent interview, adding that he and drummer Mickey Dee will be accompanied on stage by a number of special guests. “We want to do something special.”

The guitarist said that details are still being worked out and there’s no word on the specifics of the shows yet.

Last month, Lemmy‘s final solo recording was released nearly two years after his death. Approximately six months before his death, the metal icon collaborated with Chris Declercq on what would become his final solo recording, titled "We Are The Ones."

In a statement, Declercq addressed Lemmy, saying: “You opened a door no one else wanted to open for me. You allowed me to share precious moments with you as a composer, musician, and friend. By helping me, you showed that you were the most generous, humble and honest man. I am honoring your gift every day and you are forever in my heart.”

Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters To Release 'Live At David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption' on DVD

Available to own for the first time on DVD & digital video, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters' Live At David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption on February 9, 2018. Filmed as part of David Lynch’s inaugural Festival of Disruption, one of Los Angeles’ most anticipated cultural events, this concert took place at the Ace Hotel Theatre in October 2016, raising funds for The David Lynch Foundation.

Performing with Sensational Space Shifters since 2012, Robert Plant continues to shift the musical goalposts, blurring the lines between rock, blues, folk & world music and finding new life in exotic beats and African rhythms.

With a set including a new take on beloved Led Zeppelin classics, stripped down versions of “Black Dog” and “Whole Lotta Love” are met with a rapturous response from the packed theater audience, with whom Plant enjoys a genuine rapport. Also included are “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” and “Going to California,” alongside solo standouts “Turn It Up,” “The Enchanter/Rainbow,” and “Little Maggie.”

This is a rare opportunity for fans to witness the legendary frontman as they've never seen or heard him before. This David Lynch-curated event aims to feature artists with “knowledge and mystery” -- undoubtedly Robert Plant has an abundance of both.

Proceeds from the sale of this DVD will benefit the David Lynch Foundation:
